John James Audubon Bird Prints
Our Audubon bird prints are high quality, faithful reproductions that are painstakingly made over the original high resolution files. Don't confuse our prints with the mass produced cheap prints, we start with the latest generation of Canon wide format printers using the new Lucia 12 color ink system, which has a durability rating of over 100 years & with 12 colors, the color spectrum is amazing. We use expensive Hahnemuhle paper, this German papermaker has been in business since 1584 & produces some of the highest quality archival paper in the World. For our prints we use Hahnemuhle 308 Fine Art Rag paper, which is made with cotton and very archival. Our canvas prints are made wtih Hahnemuhle Daguerre, which is a cotton poly blend and also rated very high in archival properties, we use the Hahnemuhle Gallerie system for stretching and mounting our canvas. Our prints and canvas are available in different sizes, from 11 x17 up to 44 x 66, so you can find a print or canvas size to suit your needs. John James Audubon was born in 1785 on a sugar plantation in Haiti. He started on his famous book, The Birds of America in 1827 and finished in 1839, this is considered the finest ornithological book ever produced. His bird paintings are known for being life like & were produced to scale. Our prints are reproduced from the first Havell edition, Audubon drew these bird pictures and all were then engraved and hand colored mostly by Robert Havell. The original prints measured approximately 26 by 39 inches. It is estimated that only around 180 complete folios of Audubon Bird Prints were originally published and most of these were taken apart over the years and the prints sold sepearately, making the complete books extremely rare. A recent sale of one of the first printings of this book sold for 12 million dollars. Our birds are listed below in alphabetical order as Mr. Audubon named them in the 1st Havell edition.
